The situation led to the near neglect of the university, resulting in persistent student riots and strikes. The sour relationship between the State and the academia, represented by students and staff at the University of Nairobi continued almost in the next 10 years, marked by massive crackdown of lecturers and students perceived to be anti-government. In 1982, the country went through the abortive military coup that put university education in a spin after the Government closed the University of Nairobi for 14 months as a punishment for support of the rebel soldiers by a section of students and staff.
